ENGLISH ROSE SERIES

The English Rose series is an ongoing project which is based on the narrative of a fictional female botanist. This character is initially placed in the late 19th century, with a (flawed) knowledge beyond her time.

The protagonist aims to discover a gene for the essence of beauty - exemplified by the metaphorical English Rose.

The botanical rose is her constant point of reference - believing a true English rose exists she attempts to discover its DNA. The futility of her quest underlies and informs the whole project, which explores themes of beauty, trauma, desire and failure.

Series 1:

Suite of 38 collages documenting the first pseudo-scientific experiments carried out by the botanist.  Here, she conflates anatomical parts of the human ‘English Rose’ with their botanical equivalent, in order to try and determine the location of the mythical/nonsensical ‘English Rose DNA’

Series 2:

Drawings in which the botanist documents attempts to create her own English Rose through surgical procedures.

Series 3:

Early botanical experiments charting the origins of life of the English rose.
